Singapore, 23 September 2024 — The Singapore Reinsurers' Association (SRA) announces today its panel program line-up and Guest-of-Honor for the Singapore International Reinsurance Conference (SIRC) 2024.

Held from 4 to 7 November at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the SIRC will celebrate its 20th edition together with a distinguished line-up of experts, industry leaders, and professionals from around the world. Anchored on the central theme, 'Revolutionize Reinsurance’, the conference will outline pressing challenges faced by the industry and explore the way forward. Mr. Gan Kim Yong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Trade and Industry, and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is invited as the Guest-of-Honor and will deliver the keynote address.

“We are privileged to have Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong grace SIRC 2024. A Vision for Economic Growth and Innovation Through Reinsurance

Amidst global uncertainties and geopolitical tensions, the reinsurance sector’s role in ensuring economic stability and managing inflation has never been more paramount. With an overarching vision focused on sustainability, digital transformation, and talent development, the conference is expected to highlight critical areas that expand on its theme. This includes the essential role of reinsurance in strengthening the economy and supporting innovation, as well as addressing challenges such as climate change, artificial intelligence (AI) integration, and the evolving talent landscape.

Following Deputy Prime Minister Gan’s keynote address, the 20^th SIRC will kick off with a highly anticipated segment featuring lead partner Swiss Re Group’s Andreas Berger as he makes his first conference appearance in Asia as the new CEO. Titled “A Conversation with Andreas Berger”, this will be a one-on-one exchange with Mr. Berger, delving into his perspectives and vision on climate change, technology and talent management as he charts the path for the Group.

As an opening to Day Two, the panel, "Mastering a Sustainable Future in Turbulent Times: A View from the Top", will explore strategies and insights necessary to navigate the complexities of the current reinsurance landscape. The Singapore Reinsurers' Association (SRA) has revealed more senior industry leaders who will be joining the strong cast of speakers and panellists who will be featured at this year's 19th Singapore International Reinsurance Conference (SIRC), which will be held from 30 October to 2 November 2023 at Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands Singapore.

SRA chair, Mr Marc Haushofer, said, “We are very pleased to have on board Mr Renaud Guidee, CEO, Reinsurance, at AXA XL; Mr Achim Kassow, Member of the Management Board at Munich Re; and Mr Urs Baertschi, CEO P&C Reinsurance of Swiss Re as panellists on the CEO Roundtable, which will kick-off proceedings on the second morning.”

The SRA had earlier announced that Mr Jean-Jacques Henchoz, CEO of Hannover Re will be the industry keynote speaker on the opening day of the conference, which will focus on the theme, ‘(RE)INSURANCE RESET’.

Mr Haushofer said, “This is an extremely strong slate of senior industry leaders who will be participating in the Roundtable, which will be moderated by Mr James Vickers, chairman, International, at Gallagher Re. I believe the session will certainly spark highly interactive and incisive discussions on the state of the industry!”

Many of us may probably have had little interaction with Theresa, even though she was quite the industry veteran, having entered the industry in July 1990 before rising through the ranks to be CEO of Singapore Re in 2014, probably one of the few women leaders of her generation. She was co-opted into the SRA EXCO in July 2003 and served for a total tenure of 18 years by the time she stepped down in September 2021 - an amazing record that may never be broken!

Yet, she wasn’t someone that you might describe as the ‘life of the party’, preferring to take a low profile and shun the limelight. However, colleagues and friends who knew her would describe her as a meticulous ‘workhorse’ who was very sharp and perceptive.

“She was very humble and had a quiet demeanour, but she had very powerful and well thought-through views on many important issues, which gained my respect”, remembered SRA Chairman, Marc Haushofer.

Other friends and family remembered her for being a tenacious fighter who even took up a new hobby not long after she was diagnosed with the illness that she eventually succumbed to. She has been taken from us in her prime. She will be missed. Farewell, Theresa!

The Green Finance Industry Taskforce (GFIT), convened by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), issued a consultation paper on a green and transition taxonomy for Singapore-based financial institutions and launched an environmental risk management (ENRM) handbook for banks, insurers, and asset managers today.

The GFIT comprises representatives from financial institutions, corporates, non-governmental organisations and financial industry associations including the SRA. Chaired by HSBC Singapore CEO Mr Tony Cripps, its mandate is to ideate and implement initiatives to accelerate green finance across four focus areas: (i) develop a taxonomy, (ii) enhance environmental risk management practices of financial institutions (iii) improve disclosures, and (iv) foster green finance solutions.

In this connection, the GFIT has issued a Consultation Paper that seeks to gather feedback on its recommendations on the environmental objectives, focus sectors, and a “traffic-light” system which sets out how activities can be classified as green, yellow (transition), or red according to their level of alignment with the environmental objectives. The public consultation taxonomy document is available on the Association of Banks in Singapore’s website. Interested parties may submit their comments by 11 March 2021.

Concurrently, the GFIT has also issued a Handbook on Environmental Risk Management that offers guidance to banks, insurers, and asset managers on best practices in environmental risk management. It will support the finance industry’s efforts to implement the MAS’ Guidelines on Environmental Risk Management.

The GFIT will build on the handbook and work with industry associations to conduct capacity building workshops for financial institutions. This will provide continued support for financial institutions in improving their environmental risk management capabilities. In addition, the GFIT is developing practical guidance and exploring technology solutions for financial institutions to improve climate-related disclosures. The GFIT also aims to pilot innovative solutions that address current challenges in mobilising green finance across sectors. These resources will complement the taxonomy and ENRM handbook.

The Singapore International Reinsurance Conference (SIRC) has evolved rapidly over the last five years.

From being once every two years, sharing its seasonal slot with the East Asia Insurance Congress, it became annual, and now in its very latest format, the organisers made the bold decision to go virtual at short notice.

One clear benefit was not getting lost in the (rather gloomy) hallways of the Marina Bay Sands whilst late for a meeting on the other side of the conference hall.

However, it was a great shame not to be able to network, see innovations on the stands, and hobnob at the well planned and well stocked parties. We have learned the positives and negatives about living in a ‘digital world’ this year more than ever.

Luckily the production has been slick and the market has responded positively with over 1,600 delegates involved. It is increasingly becoming a “must attend” from across the world.

Nick Garrity, chief executive of IGI Labuan, told InsuranceAsia News: “The organisers did a great job providing a virtual platform which allowed us to establish new relationships with a number of cedents and reinsurance brokers who realise that as the market starts to harden in Asia they cannot always rely on their established relationships to give them the solutions they need.”

Garrity, unveiling an IGI APAC legal expenses policy, added: “As the coronavirus continues to unfold, access to justice has never been more important for SMEs. Legal disputes are becoming much more likely, and many SMEs may not have the cash or the expertise to protect their legal rights.”

Denis Kessler, chief executive of Scor, spoke about how the reinsurance market had failed to model the pandemic properly. He said a pandemic had usually been thought of as a hit to the L&H market but instead it had had a far more significant impact (almost 90% of claims) on P&C players.

It’s tremendously difficult to prevent or mitigate these risks but we should try, and examples include the UK’s Pool Re (for terrorism risk).”

An independent chief risk officer would surely be a huge benefit to any government. That person would grow an in-depth understanding of the tools and machinery in place to react quickly to any crisis. A risk management expert with great communication skills from a global blue chip with significant exposure to the (re)insurance market could be perfect.

One of the many problems associated with the poor US government response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was having a political appointee (Michael Brown) as head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

At the Opening Ceremony of the SIRC 2020 Re-Mind Virtual Conference and Networking event on Monday, 2 November 2020, the distinguished Guest-of-Honour, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and Minister for Finance, Mr Heng Swee Keat delivered the Official Keynote Address and announced the launch of the Global-Asia Insurance Partnership (GAIP), a new global centre of excellence in risk management in Singapore that is a tripartite partnership amongst regulators, academia and industry. Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University will be the research institution partner under the GAIP, to work on studies about the future development and needs of the insurance sector.

The SRA is hosting the SIRC 2020 Re-Mind virtual event will be held on the same dates – 2 to 5 November 2020 – as the rescheduled 17th SIRC. This virtual event, to be co-hosted by Swiss Re, will set the standard for industry conferences in the future digital world.

SRA Chairman, Marc Haushofer said, “We have thought long and hard about this and believe this virtual event concept is very innovative and will set the standard for industry conferences in the future digital world”. He added, “We have shared this idea with several of our key stakeholders, including our regulator, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and they have been most supportive.”

Heading the stellar cast of speakers lined up for the virtual conference is Mr Heng Swee Keat, the Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and Minister for Finance, who will be the Guest-of-Honour at the Official Opening Ceremony of SIRC 2020 Re-Mind on Mon, 2 Nov at 4.00pm. Also on the programme will be Mr Denis Kessler, Chairman and CEO of SCOR who will deliver a keynote address, while Mr Christian Mumenthaler, Group CEO, Swiss Re will participate in a fireside chat. As co-host, Swiss Re will be curating 3 plenary sessions while A.M. Best will be organising a market briefing during the Conference period.
